Would You Have a Chocolate Bar for Breakfast?

By February 10, 2016No Comments

I hope the answer to the title is ‘No’! However if you are one of the many people who have the Nutella jar on the table in the morning for spreading on toast or with your apple slices then this is what you are doing.
With a name like Nutella you would presume this was a nut spread, right? This assumption is very wrong!! It should be called Sugella as this is a sugar spread with palm oil, a hint of hazelnut and cocoa. In fact hazelnuts only make up about 13% of the ingredients and cocoa powder about 7%!!
The clever people who market this product make it sound like it is quite an innocent product, but the truth of it is the main ingredient – at approximately 55% – is sugar! A suggested 20g serving (about 1 tablespoon) contains a whopping 10.9g of sugar! The current recommended amount for an average adult is about 25g. So in one serving at breakfast you would have had nearly half your daily allowance and you haven’t even got dressed yet!
The fact that this product is marketed towards children along with sugary cereals is shameful, and is a prime example of why children with obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, tooth decay and other serious illnesses are on the rise.
Did you know you can very easily make your own version with all healthy ingredients:
140g roasted hazelnuts
3 tablespoons raw cacao powder
60ml milk or almond milk
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons raw coconut oil (warm in microwave to make a liquid)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
pinch of salt (optional)

Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
There are plenty of other recipes using different nuts etc. and you can modify it to your taste.
With Pancake Day just around the corner Nutella is all over the adverts, so I thought why not have a tasty alternative this year keeping you and the kids happy and healthy.
