Top Foods To Eat For A Healthy Brain!!

By October 26, 2015No Comments

Although we don’t see it, our brain – like the rest of our body parts – ages, and when scanned can be measured how old it is in comparison to our body; sadly Olay do not make a BB cream we can rub on to reduce this.
It has been very big news recently that Alzheimer’s is growing rapidly and studies are suggesting it is a ‘man-made’ disease brought on by our current lifestyle of poor diet, lack of exercise and over-use of prescription drugs.
So I decided to find some of the best brain food there is to keep our brains young and beautiful, so you will always remember where you left the keys.

At 5: Leafy Green Veg

A good source of Vitamins B6, B12 and folate that help us break down homocysteine, which is linked to forgetfulness. They are also high in iron, actually more than a pint of Guinness (and too much of that will also cause memory loss!) Low iron can reduce our cognitive function.
Add spinach to your salads, omelettes, make a bed for your chicken, or blend with lemon zest and juice for a zingy healthy dressing.

At 4: Nuts and Seeds

Delicious natural and versatile, nuts and seeds are packed with Omega 3 & 6, Vitamin B6, E, thiamin, magnesium and folate which help with thinking clearly and increased memory, and Omega fatty acids are proven to be a natural antidepressant so “happy days” (literally).
Add a couple of teaspoons of seeds to porridge and stir-fries, snack on almonds (not too many), and chop them up and enjoy on natural yoghurt with berries. Don’t know which seeds to use? Purition do a lovely Superseed blend which will add multiple flavours and varied nutrients to yoghurts, cereal or anything else that you fancy adding them to.

At 3: Blueberries

Known as a super food for a reason. Rich in antioxidants, which prevent cell damage, they also have fisetin, a flavonoid proven to prevent memory loss and age-related brain diseases
Add to porridge or smoothies; have as a snack or with natural yoghurt as a dessert.

At 2: Oily Fish

Once again high in Omega 3 – that lovely natural antidepressant – oily fish helps with the transportation of oxygen swimming up the bloodstream to the brain, keeping it functioning correctly throughout the day.
Throw in fish twice week; it’s great for breakfast, lunch and dinner (not battered and deep fried with a side of chips, though.)

At 1: Cacao

Sadly I’m not talking about a bar of Galaxy (sorry), but this powder is my top suggestion, raw and cold pressed. It is highest ranking in antioxidants beating blueberries, goji berries and green tea. Fighting against cell damage, it also helps with blood flow to the brain.
Add a teaspoon of cacao powder to smoothies and protein shakes for a tasty and healthy boost. You can also use it in baking and desserts.
Now we are thinking clearly let’s take a look at how we can improve your complete health in mind and body. At Potential Personal Training we aren’t just a place to exercise – we offer nutrition advice tailored for your individual health needs, as well as tools such as downloadable recipes.
